unnecessary delay between games
At the start of the third game, Team S is not on the court ready to play as the three minutes expire; R2 had to call them twice after the busser. Team R is ready. I rule unnecessary delay and award point/loss of rally to team R. Team R now has the serve and a one point lead. But wait it gets better. Team R serves into the Net; score is tied. Team S serves a couple of points before the Scorekeeper tells me that the first server was serving not the second server. So we remove all the points earned by the wrong server, award team R a point, score after correction is 2-1. Team S was a bit upset because in their mind the score went from them leading 1-5 to them losing 2-1.

I was afraid of that. Is it a time out and a loss of rally?

If I recall correctly, a UD is a time out. If no time outs remain, then it becomes a loss of rally.

lol, as a wise official once told me:
Only enforce the rules you know. It would have been better to not given a UD if you did not know the penalty. :D |
We go over UD quite a bit in our chapter as it seems to happen quite a bit.
It's good to know that rule by heart. |
Delay
In Canada, we would go "delay warning" which is noted on the score sheet. Any subsequent delay, of any kind, is a "delay penalty = point".

Also, a good R2 can usually usher a team onto the court to prevent the UD.;)
