smart phone

I saw a coach using a smart phone during a match.
Would that be allowed?

If it is being used for statistical purposes, it would be considered legal.

Per 12-2-8g:
Quote:

ART. 8 . . . Unsporting conduct for a coach, substitute or team attendant includes, but is not limited to the following:...
g. Using electronic equipment, excluding computers (i.e., television monitoring/replay equipment, headsets, etc.), for coaching purposes during the set or any intermission; ...
If it is being used for coaching purposes, it is a card on the coach.

Hope that helps.

I would be hard pressed to not call a smart phone a computer and let this one slide. Most smart phones have as much or more 'computing power' than the computers I used in college the first time around.

I feel this is a nit that I am not going to pick.

The key question is, "Is it being used for statistics or to view the match?" If the answer is statistics, no problem. If it is being used to view the match, its use is discontinued and the coach receives a card for unsporting conduct.

Agreed. If the coach is viewing replays on his phone he and I will be having an unhappy (for him) conversation. There are too many apps out there for almost every smart phone to be used to keep stats.

Most coaches I know would be checking the football scores...;)
