Never happened to me in volleyball before. Basketball, sure, but. . .

Had a first today. A parent waited for me outside the gym to evaluate my performance. His appraisal:

"Nice job today. You only missed two calls. Cost us two sets. Nice job."

Ignore for the moment the fact that the girls put 10 hits into the net, had 15 service errors, and put 10 passes into the bleachers. Apparently it was one possible lift I didn't call and one other call that cost them the match.

This happens a lot in basketball. People, in general, seem to care more about basketball than volleyball around here. But it's never happened to me after a volleyball match.

Sad really-here my team thanks their officials after every match win, lose, or draw.

I've never had that happen, but it's because of a policy all the officials abide by here. It's called "Toot & Scoot." Leave the court immediately after you signal game over, so you can hightail it out quicker. I like it.

Had a reporter trail us out and a fan after that one time. Home team lost in straight sets and didn't approach 20 points. My partner spoke to them briefly, but I tried to hurry her along. If the guy had such an issue with a scorer, he should train to become one.

Had one parent come and confront us at the table while we wre signing score sheets.

Told me that "You can take that whistle and shove it up ...."

Then he turned and left before host management got to the table.

That's one big difference between basketball and volleyball. In basketball, as Antonio described it we "toot & scoot" - at final horn we make quick eye contact with the table to insure all is copacetic & then head for the door to the locker room at a quick jog. In volleyball, by contrast, the R1 has to go sign the scoresheet for the final set, which in theory makes us more vulnerable if someone has an axe to grind.

That said, in my experience volleyball is truly a "kinder and gentler" sport and instances like this are rare indeed.

Even in basketball they're not all that common. In the last ten years I've only had two that truly were over the top and could have gotten a little ugly if allowed to escalate - one a parent & the other a coach. Far more frequently we get complimentary comments or thanks.
