Charge the time-out?
Last night, the home coach requested a time-out, which the R2 granted. A brief conversation ensued and then the coach came across the court to address the fans. Apparently, someone had been shining a laser pointer at her bench.
She went immediately back to the bench and sent her players back on the court. We didn't charge her with the time-out, as it seemed like she didn't really want a time-out; she just needed somebody (and she was the only one who could do it) to address the safety issue of the laser pointer. If she'd simply said to the R2, "Somebody is shining a laser pointer at my bench", we would have stopped the match and addressed it without the time-out. So it seemed fair not to charge her for it. The visiting coach had no problem at all with our decision. (Not that that makes us right, necessarily.) Did we do the right thing in this case? |
I don't have a problem with the way you handled it.
|
No problem, but the coach should approached the sub zone and talk to the R2 about the situation, not request a time out.

The coach handled the situation appropriately. Calling the TO was a quick and easy way to handle it. Once you and your partner were in the loop, you handled it appropriately and made a good decision.

I'm no rules guru, but it sounds like you handled it properly to me. Why would we want to throw up any obstacles to a coach taking care of a situation like this?
|
I think you handled it great. The coach requested a time out much the way they would have in order to discuss a correctable error. In this case - no error - but something that needed to be corrected. It is a safety issue and not something that the R2 would necessarily see while performing their duties.
After correction - no time out charged. |
