In my pre-game yesterday (before my first HS match, yeah!) my partner indicated that I should signal her the number of the offender for being in the net or over the center line. And as an example she held up three fingers for the number 8. When I looked puzzled, she said that's how you do it in volleyball. But then we got interrupted and I never got to ask about how that works.

How does this work?

I'm not sure about three fingers for the number 8, what happens if you have a number 3 and a number 8 on one team?

If I call a net or centerline violation as either R or U, I will try my best to pick up the number of the player and signal it directly to the bench. My experience has been that coaches are almost always going to ask if it was not obvious. If I'm U and it's a weird number, like 17, I will just turn and say to the coach - Number 17, coach. If for some reason, I can't pick up the number, I will give a position if asked - Middle blocker, coach.

I've not ever heard of relaying the number to your partner so s/he can tell the bench...you made the call, you tell the bench.

IMO, this would be one of those finer points that you try to add to your game after you are comfortable with the basics. With you being new to VB, I would recommend that you focus on the basics of just training yourself to see the net touches and centerline violations and get comfortable with making those calls. Often, those calls will happen when the ball is in flight over a different area of the court. The U will be the only person in the gym still watching the net and centerline while everyone else is focused on the ball.

Under NCAA rules, when the R2 initiates a net fault, he/she signals net, then signals the number to the R1. The R1 then signals the number to the coach of the offending team, then initiates the loss of rally signal, which the R2 then repeats. The number eight would be shown using both hands (five fingers on the right hand, three (thumb, index, and middle) on the left hand) simultaneously. If #53 committed the fault, the sequence would be the same, except the right hand first (to indicate a 5 as the "tens" digit) followed by the left hand.

I don't believe NFHS standardized how they want the sequence or identification to be done.
