3x5 question
I am a fairly new official, and just was wondering how do you use the 3x5 card to keep track of rotations? I am a big fan of the disk and was jsut wondering what others thought!
Thanks! |

Here's my method:
I fold my 3x5 in half and then divide the half card with a vertical line down the middle (making two columns). This 1/2 card fits easily in the palm of your hand and you can easily signal without the obvious visibilty card showing. The line-ups are written down each side of the columns keeping each team on their correct side. I check the number of the previous server against my card- keeping in mind that the server and the two players listed above her on my card are in the back row, the 3 players below the server are in the front row. The only thing I write on my card are substitutions (crossing out the previous player's number and writing in the new player's number) and timeouts. I don't keep track of score, serving, libero or anything else. It doesn't work for everyone, but it works for me! |
My son uses the card, I use the wheel. To each his own I guess. I've been getting better at never looking at it much except to turn the wheel.

I use the line-up sheets turned in by each coach and the official scorekeeper.

The wheels are OK, but I had one that wouldn't stay in place once and it drove me crazy all tournament long. I use the 3x5 card and only a pencil so I can erase if needed. I personally don't fold it, but a lot of people do. I put a line / by the servers the first time through and a line through that line to make an X the second. I write all subs and TOs on it. Actually, I just follow the procedure that's in the rules book. Everyone has their own variation. I always find some way to help me remember positions, too. For example, a couple of nights ago I located th C and remembered C, #9, headband... Or C Ribbon, 45, etc. I'm not trying to go without a card. Plenty of things to mess up without getting it all fouled up in me head! :)
