I think I know the answer, but want to call upon the "seasoned officials" as I am 'green' as a "frog on a lilly pad."

While I was volunteer officiating a scrimmage at the local High School, a Player (RF) from the serving team asked me for a service check.

I shrugged my shoulders and smiled. She then said "Never mind and went on about her business."

I presume she wanted me to verify that she was the next in the serving order. Am I correct? Do officials normally answer that question or are players expected to keep track?

Your feedback is ever so helpful!

The Captain or Coach can request a "service check" or more commonly a "line-up check".

It should be directed to the 2r or umpire, and should not be requested excessivly. When this is requested you simply tell the whole team what order they should be in, not just the server.

My suggestion would be to ask your book either who the last server or nexter server is just in case your card is off.

You will get this a lot at the MS level or on teams that do mass subs alot.

PS-I bolded the captain for a reason. Most players will ask you when they get lost, but for some reason volleyball, as opposed to other sports, really wants the captains to speak. If someone else asks you, you shouldn't dismiss it, just have the captain ask the next time. If not the other coach may notice and start in on you.
