Thoughts?

I'm a basketball ref and the AD of my kids' school has approached me about reffing volleyball for Jr. High. I never played volleyball when I was in school. Do you think I would be able to catch on well enough to be good at this? I don't want to do it unless I can be a service to the sport and be good at it.

Good place to start...

newladyref, if you have never played volleyball, then junior high is a good place to start. Both you and the players are in a similar situation, in that you are both learning the fundamentals of the sport and learning about the rules as you go.

As you begin, you will want to read the rules book and then find out what modifications your state association, region or league may be making for junior high matches. In addition, if you can watch some matches when you are not refereeing, you will begin to pick up things that way. Also, talk with any volleyball officials in your area who are well respected and knowledgeable about the art of officiating.

Good luck.

Newladyref,
I'm a thre sport ref .. basketball, soccer, and volleyball. You'll find that VB doesn't take too long to pick up the basics... but it does take some time to get good at it. Since you're already an official you have a big advantage in that you know procedures, decorum, etc. Net play at Jr. High isn't all that fast or difficult. HS gets much quicker, but the skill levels usually make that easier to officiate...at least to me. Things like overlapping, back row attack, etc. will come in time, especially if you work with "good" veteran officials. The opperative word in that sentence is "good." I love doing JH VB and think you will, too. It's a lot of fun to do and a very different atmosphere than Baskeball.

Click on the user's name, a drop-down list will come down. The second option is "send a private message [pm] to tjones1" or whatever the user name is. Give it a try!!

Bob,

It appears you don't have PMs turned on. To turn them on, go to the: User CP > Edit Options ; scroll down the the second box of items (Messaging & Notifications), enable private messaging. Now you can follow my last post on how to send a PM.

Thanks...

tjones1, for giving the info on how to activate Personal Messaging. I wasn't aware that I did not have it active on my account. So, thanks to your post, I have activated it on my account, too.

Again, thanks! :)
