What is the purpose of the new signal #2 which is said to indicate a line violation?
I believe this is the signal to use when a fault is occurred at the time of service. Is it also the signal to use for a center line violation by a player? Anyone know why the change in NFHS? What signal do you then use to signal a ball that has crossed the centerline UNDER the net? Thanks in advance.

What they told us at our state rules interp was there was no uniform signal for line violations so they made one! Yes they said it was for center or end line violations. And the under the net they said was a net violation so use that according signal

#2 would be for foot faults or center lines.
For a serve under the net, use the net signal. For any other ball under the net (NFHS), use the "ball in bounds" signal.

signal consistancy
Tony, the reason for the change in siganl #2 is to match the mechanic used in USAV and PAVO (NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA) for line violations.

Thank you everyone, for the clarification.
Felix: When the ball goes under the net you indicated " in bounds signal ". Did you mean " out of bounds "? Or is it considered an " in " ball for the team who did NOT hit it under the net? I would have thought that was a dead ball once it passes under the net and an " out " signal should be used. That is my confusion. Just looking for the right signal to use for all to understand. Thanks in advance.

Tony,
High school hasn't made it that far yet in terms of differentiation. In college and club, we used to have a "ball out of bounds because it passed under the net" signal, which has now, in club, been merged with the line fault signal. High school, however, still considers that ball passing under the net to be the same as a ball that lands on that team's side. The signal is still, for now, ball in bounds on the defense's side, point to the offense.

Tony,
This helped me. Point the finger for a violation with the body (line violations, etc.) Use the hand for the ball. Hope it does you, too.
