My first protest!
 

High School match last night. No LJs. Joust at the net and the ball lands right in front of the stand on my right, so I'm looking almost straight down at the top of the ball. I call it in and award the point to Team A on my left. My R2 comes to the stand and tells me he's 100% sure that it landed out.

Why does he know this when there are at least two players returning to the floor at the net? But he says he's positive. So I change my call to "out" and award the point to Team B on my right.

Team A captain comes to the stand to ask for an explanation, which I give. Coach says if it's simultaneous contact at the net, it should be a replay. And he protests the rule application. I go to the table, get out my rulebook, and show him the rule, and he's satisfied.

This is literally the first time that I've ever had to pull out the rulebook for a protest. But here's the catch. I had the USAV rulebook in my bag, not the NFHS. So. . . is the rule the same in FED?

Yes -- a joust is considered to be last touched by the team opposite the side where the ball ends up.

Thanks for the confirmation, Bob. I would be so mad if I got it wrong because I didn't know the rules differences.
