shirts

Worked with a fellow ref the other day. At the pregame he made the following comments:
1. Ok girls, shirts- must all be tucked in or all left out (referring to the entire team).
2. If during the game he sees midrif, he's going to issue a yellow card.
3. At the start of match, only the 6 starters are allowed to assemble on the back line, then approach the net on whistle to shake hands.

#3 sounds correct, but I never thought of it.

Thanks in advance

Sounds a wee bit over-officious to me.

IMO, that official would win the the O.O.O. award for the day!

What ruleset were you using? USAV? Did you talk about it post-match? I'd like to hear the rationale for requiring all jerseys to be worn the same way. I would definitely question my partner about issuing a card if a player's midriff is exposed.

He caught me off guard. I like working with different refs. Learn something new all the time. But I am still looking for answer(s) to my 3 questions. Is there any rule to support his comments?
NFHS rules.

NFHS rules.

1) 4-2-1b. Some might interpret "worn as intended" as meaning tucked in (or not). And, some might also take it as if they are the same uniform, then one or the other applies.

2) 4.2.1c -- says "when standing"

3) Mechanics, "Starting the Match" (page 71 in 22-23 book) indicates "players" at the end line

Does it indicate ONLY players?

1. The first referee checks to see that the line judges and second referee are in position. The first referee whistles ti direct the players to their respective end lines. (If the teams have already been on the end line for introductions, the starting players may assume their positions on the court.)

2. When all officials are ready, the first referee shall whistle and signal the players onto the playing court. If the players have not already shaken hands, they may do so at this time.

4.2.1h
Uniform top: 1. Bare-midriff tops are not allowed. 2. The uniform top shall hang below or be tucked into the waistband of the uniform bottom when the player is standing upright.

2024-25 Rules Changes (see others at nfhs.org):

5-4-3c(1): Allows all players on the roster, not just starting players, to stand on their respective end lines prior to the first set.

Rationale: Encourages the inclusion of all players in the prematch announcements.
