Video of Play - Comments?

Happened upon this video clip. Anyone have any thoughts / commentary whether it was handled correctly?

Sure looks to me like that first contact was a block. I do not have 4 contacts on that play. Tough way to lose a set at 34-33.

It depends on how close to the net the player was (can't tell form the video), and whether she was trying to "deflect the ball coming from the opponent" or was playing the ball in a pass or just out of reaction, etc (referee judgment).

Ref judgement

IMO, from the angle of the video I can't tell. As others have said that it depends on ball location, and that's why we get paid "the big bucks".

I saw this as twitter post in response to the video's post: Replying to

Little known rule: When both teams get to 33 points, a block actually counts as a hit. /s

HUH???

I think the "/s" means "end of sarcasm".

Okay. Good, I did not know that! Thanks!

Unless she's WAY off the net, which doesn't appear to be the case, this is just an odd looking block. Often, when something looks odd, we refuse to call it what it is. This isn't a traditional looking block, but would appear to have all the checklist criteria for a block.

It can be fairly determined that the blocker (er, first contact) was at the net by watching the location of her feet when she jumps and lands. She's very near the center line.

Block. One handed and bad, but it's a block. Watching the video several times, looks to me like the referee got talked into the "4" call by the winning coach.

Block

I just watched the clip on my computer. It was IMO a block, however ugly. Therefore, an IC by the R1.
