Server Catches Tossed Ball
 

Is it a USAV rule that a server can't catch the tossed ball to get a re-serve? I had a player do this in a HS match over the weekend, and the coach complained (mildly). I thought I knew the rule, but I'm new enough that the coach made me doubt myself. I'm just wondering if the coach would be right if it were a club match -- so I can address his concerns properly the next time this happens.

USAV you cannot catch a tossed serve, even at the 14U level where a re-serve is allowed.

NFHS allows you to catch a service toss.

see nfhs casebook 8.1.6.B.

NFHS re-serve for swing and a total miss, or toss without attempt to hit the ball including catching the ball or it hitting the servers body.

I thought I knew the FED rule, and I looked it up after to be sure. I was just wondering what might have led the coach to believe that the rule would be otherwise.
