Illegal pitch?
 

Pitcher is on the rubber with the ball in her glove. Without bringing her hands together she tosses the ball to her pitching hand. Illegal? Yes or no.

Well, the OP never stated which rule set.

NCAA 10.2.1.3 The ball must be held and remain in one hand, either bare or gloved.

Note 1: Rolling (not tossing) the ball is legal as long as contact is maintained with the hand including the wrist.

ASA 6.1-A ...... must have the ball in either the glove or pitching hand.
ASA 6.1-D ...... The ball must remain in either the glove or pitching hand.

NFHS never uses the word "remain".

Frankly, I wouldn't make that call in ASA or NFHS; have to in NCAA with that clarity and specificity of wording.

I seem to remember seeing some clarification from nfhs about the pitcher flipping ball back and forth between hands, but can't remember where I saw it or what the ruling was.

Found it. It appears their interpretation of flipping the ball back and forth involves the hands actually touching which would be illegal anyway for double touching the hands and not immediately delivering the pitcher after separating. It goes on to say it is not illegal if the hands never touch as long as it is in one or the other when simulating taking the signal.

SITUATION 1: The pitcher, while standing on the pitcher's plate taking her signal from the catcher, tosses the ball back and forth between her glove and pitching hand several times. Once she receives the signal, she then brings her hands together and pitches the ball. RULING: The ball must remain in one hand or the other while the pitcher takes or simulates taking the signal. If she is tossing the ball back and forth from one hand to the other while taking the signal, it would be considered an illegal pitch (for not taking the signal with the ball being held in one or the other). The illegal pitch would be called the first time the pitcher’s hands come together and then separate while tossing the ball back and forth. COMMENT: If the pitcher flipped the ball back and forth between the hand and glove without actually bringing the hands together, then held the ball in the hand or glove while taking the signal and started the pitch, her actions would be legal. (6-1-1a,b)
