Confused Batter

2 balls..1 strike on batter. Next pitch is a called strike. Batter thinking that was strike 3 heads to her dugout. Do you...?

A) Inform the batter that there are only 2 strikes.
Or
B) Let her continue into her dugout and then call her out:confused:

Which rule would you use to call her out?

Scooby Sat May 09, 2015 08:51pm

Tell her there are 2 strikes and get her back in the box.

Please refer back to the actual rule. Who is out for abandoning the base and entering her team area?

Who is out in that rule? It's not the batter!

So are you saying this rule for abandoning the base would only apply to a runner and a batter-runner...not to a batter.???

Yup. There is no rule declaring a batter out for entering dead ball territory. Just call her back to the batter's box, whether she enters the dugout or not.

Got it....Thx...;)

One more question. Dropped 3rd strike. BR goes to 1st. Catcher returns ball to pitcher. No play is made on the runner, but the runner looks back and thinks she is out. She steps off the base to go to her dugout.

Do we call her out on a LBR violation, even though we know she only came off only because she "thought" she was out? .... when in fact she was safe???

Would you call time and inform her that the ball wasn't caught and she was safe at 1st?

To me this is a depends on the level of play question. MS/JV ball, I am not calling the runner out if it is obvious that confusion caused the runner to leave first base after arriving. Many times (including many of my games this season), the players are new to the game, and really don't know better. (And so are the coaches)

If we are getting to Varsity or college level ball I have an out. At this level you need to have the experience to know if you are called out or not.

Just like in the other thread, that is why she has a coach. If it is a LBR violation, you call the out.
