Tennessee @ Alabama

3rd inning. U1 rings up an appeal for a 3rd out on a throwback to 1B after a line drive is caught by F4.

After coach goes just slightly crazy, checks with PU and U1 reverses the call and coach (Ms. Wheatly) insists the PU was in no position to "overturn" the call.

BTW, it wasn't close, the runner was back in plenty of time. U1 never got set and walked into the call. Can only assume he just couldn't tell the runner had made it back.

Guessing an out is OK for college ball, huh?

No, he probably made the call based on the facts he had and the positioning he had. Unfortunately, he was lacking in some departments. Has nothing to do with guessing an out.

Was the coach right/wrong about the PU position?

Didn't see the play in question, but the PU may likely be screened by F3's foot on the bag to see when the runner touched the bag. If it was obvious that the runner made it back as IM mentioned, I'm sure the PU saw it.

College coaches will often argue umpire positioning regardless if the call is right or not.

PU stepped out to the left to make the out call on the catch. Should have had a clear look to 1B.

As I noted, this wasn't close, the foot was in and on the bag in plenty of time.
