First cancelation of the season.

The OhioHSAA baseball and softball season started this past Saturday but neither Junior and I were scheduled to umpire.

Junior and I were scheduled to umpire a girls' varsity softball this afternoon but it was canceled because of poor field conditions at 01:30pm. I hope this is not a trend because except for Sundays, starting today, we have either a H.S. baseball or softball game including at least a dozen DHs between today and May 13th, except for April 18th when neither of us have a game and May 02nd when he has a game and I do not.

I think that the more than 80 inches of snow that NW Ohio received this Winter is going to cause a lot of games to be canceled because of wet field conditions. NE Ohio had it even worse this Winter and even had 5 inches more snow on Friday night.

I have umpired one high school game so far. I had three scrimmages scheduled, as well as three regular season games, that have been canceled. My next game is tomorrow, but after all the rain and snow (yes, snow again) we had over the weekend, I have to believe the field will still be a quagmire.

So,

Ask us again why Georgia plays high school softball in the Fall.

I would ask the other states (besides NE, OK, MO and CO) why you (try to) play in the Spring??

Insane Blue Mon Mar 31, 2014 11:41pm

1 cancellation due to rain  and about 25 games worked since March 4th :p Just have to love So. Cal. weather :D.

KJUmp Tue Apr 01, 2014 04:28am

I've lost four college DH's in the last 10 days to weather and grounds issues.

azbigdawg Tue Apr 01, 2014 05:00am

Rain? Snow?

Working so many games that I would be happy to see a cancellation! :p

In Texas, fall and spring are pretty interchangeable. I have only had one cancellation since the first of Feb. That was two weeks ago. This past Saturday it was in the 80's.

Part of it is tradition I believe. Sport seasons start close to when the bigger professional sports seasons start. The other main reason is fall-sport overload and competition for sports.

Tonight I will do my 55th and 56th HS games of 2014.

Not a single bit of jealousy from me. Haven't worked my first game of the season yet and I have no real desire to until I can do it without being cold on the field. Till then, others can have at it.

And for the most part, you have had great weather for them, haven't you?

Mark T. DeNucci, Sr. Wed Apr 02, 2014 09:50am

We had our first games of the season yesterday. We each had baseball games at different schools. This year (including this past Monday's wet field cancellation) Junior has 51 baseball or softball games on 39 dates (including 12 DHs); I have 53 baseball or softball games on 39 dates (including 14DHs); and of those dates we are together for 28 baseball or softball games on 22 dates (including 6 DHs). And of course like the good son that he is we will work the Plate for both games in those DHs we have together, :D.

We are together for a baseball game this afternoon. And as usual I will buy dinner after the game, :D. Due to our game locations and start times we were able to meet for dinner on our way home from our games and I bought dinner as usual, :p.

If the weather in northwest Ohio was anything like the weather in central Ohio, then yesterday might very well have been the nicest day we get all season. We had 74 degrees and plenty of sun. Not your typical early spring Ohio, for sure!

My first games are this coming Saturday. After the perfect day we had yesterday, we're getting three days of rain and then it's only supposed to be about 45 degrees at game time. Now that's more like a typical Ohio spring day.

Tomorrow, I umpire at Adrian (Mich.) H.S. (about 35 miles from our home) and Junior umpires at Perrysburg (Ohio) H.S. (about 18 miles from our home). BUT!! The forecast from Adrian to Perrysburg and everyplace in between is for a low of 34F tonight with a 50% chance of rain, and a high of 38F tomorrow with a 70% chance of rain and thunderstorms,. Oh how I love NW Ohio weather. LOL!

It just keeps getting better and better.

By 11:30am yesterday our games for that afternoon had been rained out. By 01:30pm yesterday our game for this afternoon had been rained out. At 07:00pm yesterday Junior and I picked up a game for 05:00pm today, and at 12:10pm that game had been rained out. LOL!

Wouldn't be any umpires as many also work football and guess which game would take precedence there.

GA, if I remember correctly, has also started so early in some years it affected some of the player's national championship appearances.

IMO, the problem stems from trying to fit so many games in while restricting the number of games/days the players may participate in a school sport. Stop scheduling games in Feb & Mar in areas where the weather is not conducive to it and you will not have the amount of cancellations presently experienced.

Too many egos in the HS game and as much as some of the coaches would like to believe, the majority of the time the HS softball game has very little to do with the almighty carrot being chased.
