Is it true that NFHS has taken this rule from the expierment stage to a rule in the 2004 season?

Yes.

DP/FLEX

This is another good change which will bring ASA and Federation closer together. I also understand that ASA is going to consider changing the term "Designated Player" to the term "FLEX" to be more descriptive of what that position is entitled to do. Again, it will be nice to have the two rules closer together.

All Three

My understanding last spring was that if the rule did pass, as it did, College, NFHS, & ASA would all use the same terms. DP/FLEX. Due to printing schedules and the NFHS missed it last year by about 1 vote it could'nt happen until the 2004 rule books came out. Looks like we are headed that way.

Hate the rule, but in my opinion "DP" and "DEFO" are as definitive as it gets.

how ironic that now that the DP/DEFO rule is becoming more universal in fast pitch, the nomenclature is changed.

Maybe it is some back-room deal to make sure that everyone is at a similar level of confusion! ;)

DEFO is clearly the best term. The FLEX can only play defense, so why wouldn't they want to say DEFense Only?

Maybe NFHS can stop the presses and get rid of FLEX. If NCAA can change from "tenth player" to either of the others, why can't they all say the same? I GUARANTEE some coaches will think FLEX means they can also bat for someone else (or play linebacker).

While they are at it, how about putting both players in the same lineup card spot?

If they were going to call one of the DP/DEFO players FLEX, it makes more sense to me to call the DP "FLEX" - after all, the DP can go in on defense for any player (other than the DEFO) at any time without affecting sub/reentry status of anyone. It is the DEFO who is restricted to not playing offense - how does "flexible" define THAT position?? http://www.click-smilie.de/sammlung/...smiley-013.gif
