Refining mechanics
Fly ball over foul ground, headed for area between U1, in A, and fence.
It will not be past U1, but past 1st base. Is the proper mechanic to 1 -take the call as a fly ball chase (as in down the line), 2 - move to fence for possible assist to PU, 3 - stay in place 4 - ??? I know #2 has been discouraged by NCAA, but please ignore that for now. I apologized below for this mistake. Please give responses specifying sanction and if different for 3 ump. |

No runners on, move to an advantageous point to help, if necessary. If for some reason there is a runner on 3B (3U sys), attempt to communicate with PU in order to take possession of the call If for some reason it seems the PU may not be able to get where s/he needs to be in time for the call, see sentence above. Whatever you do, communicate with your partner. Don't assume s/he will assume anything. :) |

2013 Crew of Two Supplement NO RUNNERS ON BASE-Foul Fly to the Infield Area U1: >When the fly ball is on the first base side, move into foul territory to bracket the play with the plate umpire. >Be alert not to interfere with any fielders attempting to make a play on the ball. >Close down the distance to the play of the infielders are diving , the ball is up against the fence or near the dugout area. >Make the call on the catch/no catch if the play is facing you. Otherwise the plate umpire will make the call. Three Umpire Crew: NO RUNNERS ON BASE Reads same as above for both U1 and U3. RUNNER ON FIRST U1: Again, same as above with two additional mechanics added to the coverage... >Communicate with U3 to come make any call on R1. >When return throw goes to first base, watch play and be prepared to give help if requested. |
