ASA Unreported Substitute
 

Until it happened this weekend at NQ, I never realized how "lenient" ASA is on Unreported Substitutes.

#31 was starter and was substituted by #7 in the prior inning to play defense.

#31 is now at bat with a 2-1 count, but was not reported.
Defense appeals.

Of course, the answer is, #31 is now in the game and assumes the 2-1 count.

There is only a small window of time for any penalty to be applied to an Unreported Substitute, i.e. after completing a turn at bat and before the next pitch, legal or illegal, is thrown.

Just sayin':(

If both of these were unreported... then how the hell does PU know for a fact that #7 came in the game at all? Whose word are we believing that #7 was in there?

I don't think he said #7 was unreported.

Although this small window of time can be used at the offended teams discretion any time during the game. As long as the unreported sub is in the game or the offending team realizes their mistake and corrects it.

Now, that said, and although not mentioned in the OP.

If I KNOW there was an unreported sub followed by an unreported reentry, you bet your sweet pituty (sp?) that I will mark that on my lineup, and refuse any attempted 2nd reentry. I truly doubt that happens by accident.

But, unless I know it, I cannot and will not take anyone else's word that it happened.

In our 16A NQ (Region teams only) this past weekend, there were two instances of an unreported sub followed by unreported reentry. Believe me, with these coaches it was an accident. It was amazing some of the rules/procedures that coaches did not know. But I understand that at some levels, a coach could try to "game the system" by not reporting substitutions.

If I KNOW a substitution has taken place, I will have the lineup card out. If the coach does not come to me I will walk toward the coach, usually eliciting an "oh yeah, right.." comment from him/her as he comes to give me his subs.

If I can help it I am going to prevent an unreported sub just like I am going to prevent an illegal sub i.e. coach wants to reenter a sub in a different spot in the batting order.

And the players, coaches and managers get paid millions. So if they aren't going to be penalized, why should a 12 year old girl because her coach forgot to report her in? Shouldn't amateur sports be about participation, not disqualification?

NYS did away with penalizing unreported substitutes two decades ago. None of the arguments that people had 20 years ago and none that they make now about what might happen to the game have come true.

No more, "Sorry Ms. 9th grader who is getting her first at bat in the 12th game of the season in a 25-0 game, you're coach didn't report you as a sub. You're out and disqualified." Absurd.

And in doing so you are taking away the opportunity for the other team to catch the mistake and use it to their advantage.
