Illegal Glove: Fact or Fiction?

My buddy coaches a 12 yr old team who plays NSA rules.

His first baseman was switched to 3rd base. She kept her first baseman's mitt on. Opposing coach told the ump it was illegal. Ump agreed.

Right or wrong? I've read through a few threads on here and all I saw was something about size and/or color.

Thanks

Nearly every association got rid of the distinction between mitts and gloves years ago.

NSA still has the rule on the books. Only catcher and 1st may wear mitts.

The only difference is that the glove/mitt warn by the catcher is not subject to the size limitations that the other defensive players have. It doesn't say that players other than the catcher can't use a catcher's/1st baseman's mitt.

SECTION 3
All fielders must wear gloves or mitts made of leather or other approved materials. Only the catcher and first baseman may wear mitts. The glove worn by a pitcher must be uniform in color. Gloves or mitts optic yellow circles on the outside, giving the appearance of a ball, may not be worn by any player and will be considered illegal.

I would say the bolded section does state no other player than the catcher and 1st base can wear a mitt.

SECTION 3 GLOVES/MITTS
Gloves/mitts must be worn by all fielders. The catcher’s glove/mitt may be any
size. Gloves that are entirely gray, white or optic in color are illegal. Gloves
that have circles on the outside or inside of the glove and prove to be
distracting are illegal. The gloves worn by all fielders with the exception of the
catcher shall be governed by the following specifications:
a) The height of the glove measured from the bottom edge across the center
of the palm to a line even with the highest point of the glove/mitt shall be
a minimum of eight (8) inches and may be increased by either ½ or 1 inch
to reach a maximum height of fourteen (14) inches.
b) Width of the glove measured from the bottom edge of the webbing farthest
from the thumb in a horizontal line to the outside edge of the little finger
shall be eight (8) inches.
c) The webbing across the glove shall be measured parallel to the top end
and shall be 5 ¾ inches.

Thanks. Looks like it was the correct ruling.

This is a quirk of the NSA rules.

For slow pitch they allow a mitt to be worn at any position.

For fastpitch they restrict mitts to the pitcher and catcher.

You guys need to double check which section of the rule book you're quoting. And, I suppose, the poster needs to clarify which version of the game was being played!

Fair enough.

Yikes. Brings back bad memory of working a high school game here years ago, Federation rules. Visiting team had a 3rd base player wearing a mitt. After she caught a pop fly for an out, the home team coach comes out to argue that she was using an illegal glove. He simply would not believe that it was legal in Federation play. I knew it was illegal in ASA, and told him, but he kept at it. He comes up to me after the game waving a rule book. What a fool. So he says he is having me black balled from his games. I said fine. Make sure you spell my name right. He was gone the next year and I've worked many games at that school.

Sorry. It was fastpitch.

Back in the day I worked high school baseball in south Texas. Our association served about 60 high school and each school was allowed to scratch only two officials so being scratched never hurt as far as getting enough games.

Coach who was upset about some call (don't even remember what as it was 30 years ago) says to me one night "Well, this is the last game YOU will ever work in Raymondville!" Me: "That's fine coach but I'll be finishing this game and YOU wont!" :D
