Walking Towards dugout after dropped third

NSA Fast Pitch, 1st base empty, dropped third strike, batter walks back halfway towards dugout (3rd base side), catcher doesn't tag batter since she didn't make the effort. As what point is it too late for the batter to take off towards 1st?

Don't know NSA, in other rules, when leaving live-ball territory.

buddy, not to sound overbearing or anything, but the point of both the OP and the deja vu comments was the "walking towards dugout"; and the replies about the player's position (live or dead ball territory) would apply regardless of why the B became a BR - U3K, batted ball, etc.
