batter hits ball after hits ground

The batter hits the ball after the ball hits off the ground before crossing the plate. Is this legal?

Stupid, but legal, as far as I know. Anyone have a citation on this?

In fast pitch it is legal. The batter can swat at a slow roller if s/he wants. ASA 7-5A

It is not legal in slow pitch. ASA 7-4B & 7-5B

and

if she didn't violate a batter's box rule


then why wouldn't it be legal ?

you'd call it a hit if it were 3 feet over her head and she swung and hit the ball, right ? before the plate or otherwise

In ASA read 7:4:B and C. Also read 7:5:A and B. In fast pitch, yes, they may swing and hit the ball that touches the ground first. In slow pitch...no.

I have found that you have to get up early or just
stay up glued to your computer to beat Tom to the
questions. Then after he has answered, you don't
really want to, cause he always get them right.

In all the slo-pitch leagues I worked, swinging at a pitch that already hit the ground was an automatic out. Contact with the ball was not necessary, just the swing.

I like outs as much as the next umpire, but calling someone out for attempting to strike a dead ball is absurd.
