I regularly take bats out of games due to cracks and flat spots or being out of round.
With the composite bats like the Ultra II, you often see the layers coming apart and it will leave a rough edge, so out it goes.
The Easton Synergy is really common to have a "crack" like appearance on the surface. I am told that it is structurally sound but if it is rough enough to feel with my fingers, then it isn't smooth.
Needless to say I get a lot of grief from certain players, ie MOOSE, when his favorite stick is taken away.

Can I assume you only eliminate bats for flat spots or dents that prevent them from passing through a bat ring.

According to POE3, that is how ASA wants it called. Through the ring - legal. Can't go through the ring - illegal.

Right you are, I have rarely seen a flat spot that doesn't "swell" the bat somewhat.

True, but don't be so quick to make the ring the ultimate test. This POE is basically referring to dinged bats.

I've seen creased bats pass through the ring. That doesn't mean I allow the bat to be used though.

It is also permissible to give the ring a little help, but should not be forced over the bat. Make sure the barrel is cleared of dirt.
