When do you rain out

There is some truth to the regional stereotype that it rain a lot in the Pacific northwest, well at least on this side of the mountains it does. As the ol’ saying goes, “April showers bring May showers.” What criteria do you use to determine the field is unsafe to play? How much rain is too much rain?

If the pitcher can grip the ball well enough to pitch, we play. As to the field, I've never had to make that call. Either it was cancelled by game management before I took the field, or we finished. The in-between case where we started, it never rained hard enough that pitcher couldn't pitch, yet it rained long enough to make the field a problem has never actually happened to me.

Generic criteria: player safety.

Specific things:
Can the pitcher safely maintain her footing while pitching?
Can the runners safely advance (round the bases, start/stop, etc.)?
Are the outfielders slip-sliding?
etc.

If I have standing water in the infield, I determine the field is not playable for safety reasons especially if it's still raining. If the rain has stopped, I will delay play for awhile to see if the field will shed the water which around here can happen fairly quickly.

Pretty much how I approach it.

BuggBob: You've got goggles... keep playing. Bring a snorkel and you'll guarantee your 7 innings...

Along with all the other the conditions, I will call the game if I see the water running/sheering off the batter's brim of the helmet.

Using this criteria, I would have had to stop a game last evening in an intramural league.

Although conditions were pleasant and partly sunny, at least 4 baserunners did face plants while taking their trips around the bases. Simply, their bodies were trying to move faster than their legs could take them.

One guy splatted half-way to home and was a dead duck, but the infielder taking a cut-off throw also fell down. He tried throwing to home from his butt, but the runner managed to regain his footing and scored.

I believe they're going to remedial baserunning this weekend. First game for 1 team and the second game for the other. Quite comical overall. Each team had guys that went down and everyone had a grand old time busting on the other guys.

One of the plays was a blooper to F9 who charged in to make a catch. Runner from first tried scrambling back to first, but of course fell down, allowing that rare DP of F9U.
