Dumbest Thing a Player/Coach has said

What's the dumbest thing a player/coach has said during a game?

Mine was just last week. I'm PU in coed SP game. Ball hit down the first base line. It's going to be close whether it is fair or foul. I can't get on the line like I would like to because the runner and F3 were converging on first. So I take a step inside fair territory. Not the best mechanic I know, but it still gives me a good angle on the play. I would have been blocked if I was on the line. A step into foul territory would not have given me a better angle. The ball just hits the line on the foul side of the line. I point fair (between innings my base umpire confirmed the call). F10 is yelling..."Its foul. It hit the line!". Base umpire said he was complaining about it for a while after the call.

The line doesn't have a foul side. :)

I believe anytime I hear "The hands are part of the bat" - from whoever - it's the stupidest thing I hear that day.

But this one the other week struck me as particularly stupid. R1 on 3rd, batter draws a walk. Ball back to the circle, R1 is dancing. As soon as BR rounds first base to head to second, I look over and verify that R1 is still dancing. After calling her out and explaining why, coach says, "But that's what we teach her to do - she's only doing what we taught her." I could not stop the reply from coming out of my mouth - "Well, coach, that out's on you then."

Picky picky picky! :D I used that term to indicate which side of the line it hit. It hit the edge of the line closet to foul territory. Does that make you happy! :) The "foul side of the line" was just easier and quicker! :)

I remember as PU years ago having a foul tip and the runner on first steals second. The coach of the defensive team who had been in the business for years comes out and argues with me that since it was a "foul ball" the runner could not steal. Goes to show that coaching longevity does not always translate into rules knowledge.

12-U player.
Pitch is high and outside.
Batter checks swing.
I call BALL.
Batter turns back to me and says, "Blue, did I go?"

So what if it hit off the foul line and then hit the foul pole, would it then be fair or double foul?

I had a left handed slapper with 2 strikes she holds the bat in the strike zone while running to the pitch makes contact and the ball rolls foul. I call the batter out for a third strike bunt foul. The coach said that there is no way his player bunted because he gave her the slap sign.

No, it would be a double fair ball, but only on Tuesday, at night, with a right handed batter and with a count of 3 balls and 2 strikes. Any other day or with a left handed batter or a different count and it would be foul!

I may have told this one before, but it fits here....

I'm working solo, 12u rec league....RH batter checks her swing as I call a ball.
Some smart-a** yells out...."go for help, Blue!"
I whip off my mask, step out, point at the first base coach, and say..."did she go?" He immediately yells back "YES!" and gives me a strike signal.....then realized what he had just done, the look on his face was priceless.

I just shrugged my shoulders, thought "OK", and ring up a strike on my indicator.

I was once told that a ball that was lined down the third baseline, and struck the left corner of the bag, couldn't be fair because "It hit the foul side of the bag, Blue!!!"

Priceless

I was BU in Men's C slow pitch game. Runner on 1st no outs. Ground ball to shortstop in the hole. Throws to 2nd baseman who "catches" the ball between his elbow and body. I rule safe. Offensive coach comes up to voice his displeasure at my call. I explain that the ball must be secured in the hand or glove. Coach says "but in football....". I cut him off immediately and tell him he must be confused as this is a softball game. I turn and return to my trusty starting position.

I might have said, "Well, if this was football you'd also be getting a 15 yard penalty for coming onto the field to argue a call."

Well ... maybe I wouldn't have said it out loud. But, I would have thought it. :D

I had a new one last night. Defense made a good play and gathered briefly in the circle. As F2 is getting her helmet back on, I notice the 1B coach walking toward home plate. He says, "How about a penalty for EXCESSIVE CELEBRATION?"

I just pointed him back to his box. I guess I could have said that we would penalize them 15 yards on the next kickoff.

I was doing a tournament final in Ohio many years ago. Pretty good quality teams and good games all weekend. It is now Sunday night and we are in the 16th inning...we had some runs scored in the extra innings but, the home team always tied it up.

We had a tie score, 2 outs and bases loaded with a weak batter and an 0-1 count, strike two and the catcher air mails the pitcher and the winning run scores.

The losing parents are screaming at us and one moron, in particular screams: These girls played their hearts out blue and because YOU want to get home early, you let it end like this? THIS is how you are going to let it end? Let the girls decide the game, not you! We got a police escort to our dressing room and waited for the hooligans to leave.

Had a new one recently. 16U Gold, had a Ray Fosse / Pete Rose reinactment. Called the out and ejected the player. Coach is understandably furious as her catcher is hurt badly. After dealing with the player, she stand up and starts in on me, "You have to prevent that kind of thing!" and some such.

Gee, coach, I'm really sorry your player is hurt, but what did you expect me to do, tackle the runner?

Why is it people think it is our job to prevent players from doing stupid things instead of observing and ruling on those stupid things?

Good question. And it's worse at football. "You can't let them keep doing that!!!" "Coach, I've flagged it every time."

When you call a dead down the middle strike.....and the offensive coach hollers......"now you know that is a strike, you better be swinging next time you see that pitch."

"You need glasses."........Duh......I have them.

"That's gotta be something."......from any coach in any sport.

"How can you call that."......Easy.....my right arm goes up like this........

Yeah.....many years ago a runner overslid the bag........and while on her back kicked at the F4 attempting to make the tag. I called her out and reluctantly tossed her.....it was like a 14U game or so.....I still remember the player....she moved to another ASA district, but was still in our School District......damn fine player.....but her Dad was intense. The other coach was pissed at me.......and I asked him what more did he want me to do. He said I should have prevented it........

Had one last night that I immediately knew would be added to the list.

Close foul fly ball to left, fielder touches but doesn't catch it - she's got a foot fair and a foot foul, but the ball is clearly foul.

Parent behind me, after yelling at me and not succeeding in getting my attention, explaining what he's upset about to the rest of the fans: "It is illegal for a player to go from fair ground to foul ground to try to catch a ball - if she does so and misses the catch, the penalty is that the ball is ruled fair."
