When a runner is off the base after the pitch, and she retreats to base just after the pitcher catches the ball, do any of you guys consider that second as her one stop? Would you give her another stop? If she were walking back as the pitcher catches the ball, she would get a stop but Im talking about the time she is standing still and watching the pitcher catch the ball. How do you guys call your runners. Dan

If she stops on the base while the pitcher has the ball in the circle, or is stopped on the base when the pitcher receives the ball, and the pitcher does not make a play, she is anchored to the base - she gets no other stops.

If she is stopped off the base when the pitcher receives the ball, that is her stop. She must decide immediately which base to go to.

At least that is how I call it.

"Immediately" will get a bit longer at the younger rec levels than with travel or club teams.

About "Would you give her another stop? ", the rule is about returning immediately, so once moving in either direction, no stops are allowed (assuming the usual about the pitcher).

About "If she were walking back as the pitcher catches the ball, she would get a stop ": not if the runner was moving once the pitcher received the ball. She would have to stop before "pitcher possession".

About "How do you guys call your runners.", with benefit of the doubt to the runner, not the technicality. If the runner violates the intent, that's an out. If the runner stumbles, slows down when getting close to the base, ties a shoelace while an inch off the base, no call.
