In associations that use continuous batting orders, how do your rules address these situations? 10U 1st situation: Batter has a 2-1 count, swings at a pitch which hits her on the wrist. She is removed by her coach and parents for x-rays and medical attention. The count is now 2-2. 10U 2nd situation: Batter is hit by a pitch near the knee. After reaching first base, it is determined that she cannot continue. Is a substitute runner allowed? If so, how is the runner selected?

If by continuous batting order you mean the same thing as what we call "bat the roster", these are local rules (league, tournament, whatever) and handling these kinds of situations is hit-and-miss, since the locals usually do not think everything through.

Lacking a directive from the locals, I tell the coaches at the plate meeting how I will handle such things... if a courtesy runner is desired for F1 or F2, she will be the last out. If a pinch runner is needed for injury, she will be the last out. I haven't thought about a player injured while at bat... probably do the same, tho, last out comes to bat and assumes the count (pretty tough on a 10U batter to start out with 2 strikes, though!). Once a player is removed from the roster for injury or whatever, she may not return for that game.

One more thing... no automatic outs when the removed players turn at bat comes up again unless the team has dropped below 9 players.

Most CBO situtations I have come across are in tournaments, pool play.

Since umpires are not keeping lineups and it was usually discussed free substitutions
stick someone in and continue the game. The only thing we really don't want is their
best hitter coming up in every inning. Most teams have someone sitting with a
book and list the numbers as they have appeared at the plate and I have found
that most follow the BO as listed. Most utilize the free sub thing to run for
players nursing slight injuries and trying to rest them for when the Bracket
schedule starts.
