Talking

While waiting to take the field for my game, I was watching the remainder
of the early game. This play occured. NFHS JV game Visitors up 4-3.

Bottom 7th -
Bases loaded, two outs, count is 2-2, pitch is in the dirt, batter swings,
F2 misses the ball, dropped 3rd strike in effect. BR heads for the dugout
other runners not sure of what is happening slowly creeping towards next
base. F2 starts towards her dugout. Coach on 3rd trying to get runner to go
home without alerting defense, 1st base coach motioning to the BR and runner on
1B to advance. Runner on 2B starts towards 3rd base and while doing so removes
her helment, [note: helment removal warning has already been issued once to the
offensive team] Runner from 2B sees coach motioning to go on turns and heads for
3rd with helment in hand. All runners eventually moved up to the correct bases,
with the runner from 3rd crossing plate. However, PU killed the play at
the time runner from 2B removed her helment, saying she is out for that action
and that play had become dead prior to runner from 3rd crossing the plate,
thus no run, 3rd out, game over. What was the defense doing? F3, 4 & 6 milling
around F7 & 8 coming in and F9 just standing there. F1, 2, and 5 in the dugout.

BTW: Batterrunner never enter dugout, DBT, and no tags of bases of runners made.

Have fun,
glen

Not completely sure how this should have been resolved but here are two observations. 1. NFHS rules state that the first time will be a warning, the next time the person would be restricted to the dugout. There doesn't say anything about calling the person out. 2. This is a delayed dead ball. The umpire booted this call for two reasons. Dave

Agree that the umpire calling an immediate dead ball was not proper. If the offensive coach did not immediately protest the game, then the coach booted it too.

By the way, forgetting about the helmet situation, the run would not score if the batter runner never reached first base.

Thumbs up

Dave & Dan,

I agree with both of you. Player should not have been called out. After
the play she should have been restricted to the dugout. As I stated all
runners [BR included went to proper bases.] Game should have been tied
at this point. The defense in MHO, just went to sleep. However, it was
a JV game, so that is understandable. What the coaches were doing or
thinking, I have no clue.

That's the second time this week, actually in two days, that I have heard of runners being called out for helmet removal in NFHS. That's an ASA rule and we need to pass the word to get NFHS umpires to stop calling it wrong in HS games.

Well, Cecil, make it three....

JV game a few weeks ago, large run differential, runner coming home on a base hit to the outfield, no play is going to happen on the runner, she removes her helmet about five steps from the plate right in front of me.

DEAD BALL! Runner is out for intentionally removing her helmet!

Did not catch any heat for it, her coach started yelling at her for wearing a helmet that was too big!

Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa.......

Actually, I do, not as much as ASA/PONY travel tournaments, but any game without AA is fun.
