ASA SP Game
Bottom 7th, tying run on 3B, 2 outs and the batter has a 2-2 count. The pitch is ruled illegal by PU, but batter offers at and tops the pitch. The ball rolls in four territory near the first base line. F3 figures it is a foul ball and heads for the dugout while B4 heads toward 1B and R1 scores. F1 notices the topspin is bringing the ball back toward the line and throws his glove and hits the ball to keep it from entering fair territory. What's the call?????? |
Foul ball. In ASA you can throw your glove at and hit a foul ball. There is no penalty.

greymule,
You are no rook, and Mike said for rooks. {Even if in the umpires judgement that the ball could have gone fair?} glen [Edited by whiskers_ump on Mar 31st, 2003 at 11:14 PM] |
Sorry. I play chess and thought of "rook" simply in those terms. I admit I was wondering about "rook" in the context of softball.
|
Wouldn't the illegal pitch decision result in the ball being dead and a ball added to the count???
Second thought, is this not a balk with a runner on? Runner from 3rd scores and game is over? [Edited by woolnojg on Apr 1st, 2003 at 08:49 AM] |

How many times I've I told you about that? There is no such thing as a "balk" in ANY discipline of softball and a released illegal pitch is not a dead ball. |

OK, I know. The answer is, uh . . . Rook to Bishop four.

Now, as to the FP call, are you still wanting rookies to go first? Or, as Arnold Horshack would say... Ooooo, Ooooo, Ooooo http://www.stopstart.freeserve.co.uk/smilie/wavey.gif |

Okay, for all you folks out there who are afraid of SP, http://www.mansun-nl.com/smilies/wink.gifoffer a ruling if this were FP. [/B][/QUOTE] I don't know slow pitch, but would be suprised if there was a major difference on this. Roger Greene |
Okay, I was hoping to "out" some of the lurkers and get more people involved, but they've had 24 hours, open forum!

In FP, the illegal pitch is nullified only if the batter and all runners advance at least one base. Since that didn't happen here, the coach gets his (in this case obvious) choice of the play (foul ball) or the illegal pitch (ball on the batter and runner from 3B advances to home).

I agree with greymule on the FP ruling. Don't know diddly
about SP. I would think if a fielder used detached equipment to keep a ball from becoming fair, there would be some penalty. Go easy on my last remark Mike. glen |
Glenn & Grey,
Go read Fed 8-3-3b.1(c) and see if that changes your mind. I'd think ASA wood be similar. Roger Greene (Score the run, place the BR on 3rd unless the offensive coach is dumber than dirt.) Edit: That is an old cite. The new cite should be 8-4-3f, and as re-worded in 2002 may have changed the rule. [Edited by Roger Greene on Apr 1st, 2003 at 09:06 PM] |
