Today I had my first "base umpire wearing a ball bag" sighting of the season.

Someone should tell these guys the bags will fold up and fit in their hip pocket.

I think the subsequent conversation went like this...

UIC: "First time calling 18U Gold?"
PU: "Yep."
UIC: "Enjoy it, because it's also your last."

what a great look. At least his jock strap and cup are on the inside. Must be the new full ventilation setup you can buy at Ump Attire :)

It looks like the umpire is wearing shorts. I bet Gene would have a fit; he doesn't say much, but when he does you had better listen. I would not want to make him upset!

I stopped wearing shorts years ago, even in league play. I just don't like how it looks on an umpire.

Gene had a fit when I allowed my umpires to wear shorts for a 64 team 8u coach pitch tournament back in the early 90s. I cant even begin to imagine what his reaction would be for something like this. The ASA ballbag the dude is wearing is a nice touch. I really think he went onto the field looknig like that) :D

But I would question, does wearing shorts with full plate gear, make one any cooler? I wouldn't think it would make much a difference.

It is hot here, but no shorts on our crew.

It didn't even reach 100 this past weekend Trooper. Although I think the heat got to that coach.

Try working an AAU Boys' 16U Baseball National in Cocoa Beach, Florida, during the first week of August. The temperature is in the lower 90's by 9am.

What you are seeing is a test run of the new clear slacks from ASA, or, as they are being marketed, the Umpire's New Clothes. It is hoped that these pants will end the argument of gray v navy.

I wouldn't be too surprised to see that in Baton Rouge. In the past, LA ASA has allowed shorts to combat the LA heat and humidity. I have a framed picture on my wall of a now well-known college assigner in shorts and shin guards in a LA state tournament in 1997. (My DD is crossing home after hitting a 3-run HR and she is watching her touch the plate.)

Wholly schidt! How did my picture end up on here???!!!!

BTW, 90 degrees at 9 a.m. doesn't mean a whole lot to some of us. A few of us have worked a game or two where the low never got below 100. Didn't wear shorts then, either.
