Fair or Foul
There is a pop up in the infield that lands just past third base in fair territory then back spins about three feet and goes into foul territory on the home plate side of third base, is this a fair or foul ball. Nobody at anytime made contact with the ball. This happened in a game last night and three umpires said fair and two umpires had it foul. When you read the ASA Manual for Fair Ball Rule 1 Line F it states First falls or is touched on or over fair territory beyond first, second or third base. Then Foul Ball Rule 1 Line A it states Settles or is touched (not caught) on or over foul territory between home and first base or home and third base.
This particular play has both instances Fair Ball First Falls beyond third base Foul Ball Settles over foul territory between home and third. Well I called it FAIR BALL. |
Sounds like 2 out of 5 umpires need a good kick in the pants. ;)

How'd you get 5 umpires for this game?
;) Fair ball. |
There was only one umpire for the game and it was me. The other umpires (or so called umpires) happened to be there.

I am sure that there are 2 umpires that create quite a few comments drom the offended team about a foul ball call given your example.
I hsaw a call similar to that the other night on Men's slow pitch. Pop up about 2 feet past 1B landed in fair territory. Imagine a Tiger Woods wedge shot as it relates to spin. I watched the ball and sure enough the back spin brought it back toward home plate around the inside of 1B and then rolled into foul territory. Picture in your mind a hooking motion with the ball rolling back at you. Rember that it landed past first in fair territory to bein with. You shold have heard the adult comments when the ball was called fair. |
