Under Definitions - Defensive conference - added:

"2. A defensive player approaches the dugout and receives instructions."

Until I hear what is said at the clinic, my assumption will be anytime the game is delayed by a defensive player entering foul ball territory or the catcher leaving the catcher's box to receive instructions from the dugout, you ring up a conference. Doing so is a delay in the game since you cannot have a pitch without all defenders save the catcher in fair territory and the catcher in the box.

New rule book's equipment section is half shadowed with new rules.

Sounds like that would be the correct interpretation. Keep us informed on what you find out Mike. I can already hear the coaches whining.....

Mike,

Have you out any further reading on the Defensive Conference
being charged when a player approaches the dugout and receives
instructions?

There is nothing noted in the 2003 ASA Umpire Clinic Guide Booklet.

Thanks,
glen

Glen,

I will not receive my flip chart until next Thursday in OKC. I'm sure they'll cover the new rule in a new rules session.
