I love it when a coach gets caught.....
Jr College game yesterday.
I am PU, no runners on, no outs. Team A player lines a shot into the left-center gap, easy stand up double. Ball comes back into the pitcher, she asks for time and appeals the runner missing first (she did), my BU partner calls the out. Here comes the coach from the third base coaches box to complain. He rants and raves for a few minutes, then returns. The funny thing is that this coach teaches his runners to cut first base short to get to second quicker, assuming that neither umpire or the other team is watching. I say that because in every game that I have had this team in the last seven years, I have seen his runners do this, but the other teams never seem to catch it...until this game. I had to work really hard to keep a straight face while all of this was going on!:D |
Andy, how well do I know this coach???????? LOL

I'd say about 98% of the missed bases I catch during a game are never appealed.
And 98% of the appeals I DO get for leaving too soon or missing a base are wrong. Go figure! |

That really wasnt to hard to guess. Maybe if he spent as much time coaching as he does arguing. LOL. How does his team look this year? Most of the girls that should have returned left.

I think yesterday's game is the first time I have seen them shut out, lost the first game of the DH 7-0, lost the secong game 6-2, didn't score until the 5th inning. |
We have a coach out here (San Jose area) who teaches the kids to leave early, especially from 3rd base when he has a bunt on. I have 2-3 games with his team a year and catch them at least once a game. But he still keeps doing it so it makes me wonder what the other umps are doing. I would think that if he was caught consistently he would stop teaching this.

I also umpired behind the plate for Cat Osterman a couple of times.......my oldest actually got a clean base hit against Cat when we played them in a pre-season tourney when she play for Cypress HS. Unfortunately......she faced her a few times in travel ball and did not have any luck. Also had the great pleasure of umpiring two games with Christa Williams back in the mid 90's when Dobie played in a local HS tournament. I have also noticed that many a missed base is never appealled. And also that many that are were not really missed bases. Joel |

I remember those days. Two games come to mind both in the same year. Game 1: I was the BU and not once but twice the same player (Home Team) hits a HR and misses 2B both times. Game 2: I was the PU. It was a weekend tournament in Michigan between two high schools (neither which was the host school) that were greatly mis-matched. The very good team was the H and were scoring at will in the bottom of the first. With still no outs and the bases loaded, the batter walks (on four pitches naturally), the runner on 3B crosses HP without touching hit and proceeds directly to her team's dugout. I ring up the out, and naturally her coach wanted to know how I could make such a call. Next inning same player is on 3B again when the batter walks; she starts to trot toward HP then makes a big theatrical slid across HP. I scored the run and then ejected her for unsportsmanlike conduct. LOL MTD, Sr. |
Appeal?
