So how long does it take to get used to the gear

I brought home some plate gear the other day and the rest today. Put on the CP and the mask. Felt, well, weird. Haven't even put the shins or uniform on yet.

Is this normal?

Obviously, this is a personal issue that could be predicated by a number of things.

Don't think anyone can provide a specific answer, but just recommend that you feel comfortable in your equipment.

I was a catcher when I played baseball, so wearing the "tools of ignorance" felt completely natural to me.

Give yourself a few games but it will seem right to you, especially as your chest protector molds itself to your body. Make sure you adjust your protector so it is snug near your neck. The mask should be worn as loosely as possible so that it will still stay on your head but will come off easily if hit by a foul ball.

Start by wearing your gear while surfing the web or watching TV and practice taking the mask off with your left hand.

You will come around. :)

You might want to ask a seasoned umpire in your association to look at your equipment and make sure it's adjusted correctly for you.

Or pick your gear up personally at a dealer before you spend a couple hundred on the wrong sized gear.
