Boy, did the plate umpire kick a call on the Phillies and they are better off for it.
Halladay tried to bunt (if that is what you want to call it) over the runners. He looked as inept as Charlie Manual attempting a handstand. An excuse-me attempt hit in front of the left corner, backspinned across the plate and certainly seemed off the plate in foul territory and the PU ruled it fair. Catcher threw to 3B for a force, but F5 couldn't get back to the base quick enough. Fortunately, Halladay didn't run and they threw him out at 1B. Turned out, the Phillies ended up scoring 3 runs. Didn't MLB expand replay for fair/foul, or is that just on over-the-fence balls? |
Am I the only one who thinks it would be great entertainment if someone just punched Joe Buck and Tim McCarver in the mouth every time they say something stupid like, "he foul tipped that one into the dirt"?
|
I did not get to see that one, but watched my son's LL game the other night with the same amazement. The PU signaled a foul tip everytime a foul ball came off the bat, which was NOT ultimately caught by the catcher. The same umpire told us that he had never seen a batter not run on a dropped third strike.

However, I was really trying to figure out where U3 was going that he needed to get back to make the call at 3B. |
I wish we'd gotten better replays on this (at least better than the 2 I saw)... I'm pretty sure it was foul, but not sure the replays were good enough to "overturn" if replay existed.
And yeah, the NLCS TV crew is awful, and not just the talking heads. No replays where the viewer wants one. Endless replays on obvious calls. Bad angles in general, switching the view right at the moment of action, just bad TV. Add the talking heads and it's unbearable. (Tie goes to the runner... shoot me) |

Not defending anyone, but most announcers say foul tip when it is not so we have harder time calling by rule. :(
And yes, both baseball and football have a bad habit of switching cameras at the last minute. :( I really don't need a closeup of the QB  when I could be seeing the formation. :( |

And then we would have to listen to EVERYONE calling for instant replay for every play. |
