I've heard that some states with the Federation are going to a test season using the ASA, DEFO & DP rules. Is this true? If so is their a list of which states will be trying this?

I have no idea which state(s) may do this, but I will bet that if the HS coaches were confused when they changed the appeal process, this may cause them to blow a gasket.

Indiana Yes

I have found out or had it confirmed that Indiana is going to be at least one of them that does use the DP rule. Any one else hear of his or her state using it?

Andy Mon Oct 07, 2002 01:46pm

I know that AZ will not use it. We very rarely try any of the experimental rules in any sports.

whiskers_ump Mon Oct 07, 2002 08:28pm

Texas coaches will be asked to *experiment with it*. Not
sure if any ruling has been made. I, like Mike, feel this
change will really give them {coaches} fits. Hopefully they,
like most umpires will find and copy Steve M.'s and Dakota's
articles on the subject. Really helps. I passed out over
25 copies in our chapter and everyone thinks they are great.
Thanks guys. [kinda wish I had taken their names off and
let them think I did that work]:D

Pennsylvania will be another of the states using the DP instead of the DH. I have sent a brief write-up to all of the coaches who have attended the mandatory rules interp meeting at my chapter. I've heard back from a couple of them and that's more than I can say for a number of my umpires.

You've heard back from Coaches already?

We just held my Association's first meeting for 2003 (voting members only).........I ran (last minute) for the UIC job.......and lost.........sigh........glen......you know the guy who beat me........grin

We won't start any ASA stuff for 2003 until January........NFHS will start end of November early December..........

Joel,
Pennsylvania requires coaches to attend a rules interpretation meeting prior to each season - we hold ours in Feb. I run these meetings since I'm our chapter rules interpretor. I gave my email address to everyone there and we asked that all coaches give us theirs. Just about all of them did. So I sent an email in August listing 2003's changes and I heard back from some of them. I also saw a few at the state meetings this year and some others at a tournament or two.

Steve............

We also hold a meeting similar to that...........I think it is sometime in Nov/Dec..........but no info as of yet..........

I have not heard anything yet for 2003............maybe because I did not call NFHS last year...........

Up in the air for this year whether oldest will play HS ball or play strictly travel...........she has not made up her mind yet...........debate/speech/drama and BB has all of her attention at this time.................sigh

When I was in FL with Walt Sparks, I was told there were no substantial NFHS changes this year. And since ASA will not even address their changes for another 3 weeks, I know you are not talking about them.

What type of Fed changes are there coming?

Mike,
You were correct - for Delaware and most other states. But Pennsylvania jumped on board Fed's experiment and will use the DP/DEFO instead of Fed's DH. The other big change is also only for PA - our coaches now will follow Fed's uniform rule for coach's attire (previously PA required that the coach must wear the same style & color uniform as the players down to having matching socks).

Personally, I believe ASA may soon be going in the opposite direction and that wouldn't bother me one bit. The DH can accomplish the same as the DEFO in a lot less confusing manner.
