What????

We have discussed some of the dumb comments we have heard from sportscasters in the past, but in today's LLWS game between Hawaii and Texas, I heard one that has to rank up there at the top.

The two heads were talking about the use of instant replay in the game, and one made the comment about it not matter how much time it took to review the play, they needed to get the call right.

The other guy retorted with the following comment about umpires, "We shouldn't force them into making decisions." My question, what exactly, then, is the umpire there for?

As straight men for idiots like this?

If instead of "We shouldn't force them into making decisions." he had said "We should let them make their decisions." would you be cool with that?

Probably, and that's what I thought he might have meant when he said it, but not 2 minutes later he was talking about how there umpire was not there to make decisions that affect the game. They had to fill dead air as it was a blowout, but at the moment this discussion was happening, Tex was making their 1 and only attempt at a rally and could have made a game of it... and the talking heads are off yammering about this.

What really bothers me is that the coach can now go and ask for help simply to question umpire's judgment.

From what I saw, the coach can get the umpires together to change a judgment call, and THEN if the coach is still not happy can CHALLENGE.

That is pure crap!

I don't think the challenge is going to affect us, really. But this nonsense about huddling every single damn time they are asked - on calls where if an other umpire saw something different, you'd still go with the call of the closer official... is going to bite us in the a$$. Coaches at every level are going to have hissy fits the first time we refuse to go ask our partner for help. It's gonna suck.

Coach can go take a flying leap. My call, I saw it, sit down.

Just point out that it is Little League. With all the other hokey rules they have, that should pretty well explain it.

If they want to use video to make calls, then why dont they just take the officials off the field and make every call with the camera including using the pitch tracking cameras to call balls and strikes.

Because all the video techs required for that wouldn't work for free...

I don't have a problem with that. I'll be more than happy to call the game (and with video, it is all one-umpire games) from an air-conditioned booth with the cold beverage of my choice in my right hand since I will not be needing it to signal anything
