improper batter interpretation
 

hey everyone, i just want to check if my interpretation of the improper batter rule is correct here across softball and baseball:

in all cases, if coach elects to take the play/doesn't appeal, proceed normally...

if coach correctly appeals, proper batter out, any play made by improper batter erased/runners sent back unless they stole on their own, next batter is whoever follows proper batter plus:

FED Softball: outs made on the play stand except if against batter
ASA: all outs made on the play stand
FED Baseball: same as FED Softball?
OBR: outs made on the play erased
PONY SB: same as FED?
PONY BB: same as FED?

i really wish all the organizations across both sports would get together and write out a common rule book (obviously with some applied only to SB or BB)

ASA - You are correct, with the following exceptions:

1 - The coach can't make the appeal. Only an infielder.
2 - All runners returned, period.

A "common rule book" will never happen. Every association wants to have their "own little take" on how the game should be played.

What's the reference for 1? This was something I'd never known.

The rule is ASA 7-2-C EFFECT, and NCASAUmp is incorrect WRT the BOO appeal. The rule says the appeal "may be made by the defensive team", which would include the coach.

Hmm... I believe you're right. Doh!

I was pulling from RS #1, which says nothing about who may appeal a BOO.

Yes, that one had me scratching my head, too. :confused:

Under rule 7-2, the "EFFECT" for sections B & C says that: "Batting out of order is an appeal play that may be made by the defensive team only".

Note that this rule does not specify the appeal must be made by an player.

Rule 8-7-I says that a dead-ball appeal may be made by: "Any infielder, with or without possession of the ball...on a runner missing a base or leaving a base too soon on a caught fly ball".

Note that this rule says two specific types of appeals must be made by a player. Also note that the Rules Supplement covering appeals posted above specifically refers to the same two base running violations.

And then there is the very definition of an Appeal Play (rule 1) that says an appeal can be made by someone other than a player, such as a coach or manager.
