Unreported Courtesy Runner still an illegal player?
 

Last year ASA modified the penalty for unreported subs. Looking over ASA's illegal player rule (4.6.E and 4.6.F) and the unreported substitute rule (4.6.C) I was wondering if ASA overlooked something.

Suppose S1, who has been in the game, comes into run for the catcher who is on 1B.

Is S1 an illegal player or an unreported substitute and which rule takes precedence?

An illegal courtesy runner is an illegal player. However, if they come into run for the catcher unreported they are also an unreported sub.

In most cases, the more severe rule applies. "Comes in to run for the catcher" does not say the coach asked for a CR. Either way, S1 is not eligible to run for the catcher in any manner, so illegal sub.

So then...
 

Rule 4.6.F takes precedence. The runner is disqualified. Where as if they were an unreported sub, we just enter them as a legal substitute.

Then shame on you as the umpire for allowing such a thing to happen.

So then an unreported CR is an illegal player and is disqualified.

That is a different question, but 8.10.C & G would cover that ruling
