The body must come to a complete stop. This position (the pause) must be
held for a minimum of two (2) seconds and not more than five (5) seconds.

Basically 5 seconds to deliver the pitch once the hands come together. I wonder if this will drive any of the US pitchers a little crazy?

How long does it take Monica Abbott to complete her routine? ;)

They work on this throughout the year, and usually don't have a problem with it. Sometimes they get a little quick, but when you hit them with an illegal pitch, they fix it. It's not just the USA pitchers that try and push the "pause" rule, other countries are guilty of it as well.

I was referring to the back end where they took 5 seconds away from the pitcher.

I'm guessing here, Mike that they are only referring to the pause and not the completed delivery. I agree that Monica has a looooong motion, but I don't recall her pause to be so dramatic. Then again, maybe I'm just getting old.

I'm only referring to the point that the pitcher must start the pitch within 5 seconds of bringing the hands together.

Irish,

When a pitcher decides to take a pause of 5 sec.'s, I think (read: know) a lot of the batters will ask for a time-out! The pitcher will drive the batter crazy...
I can't say anything about the US-national pitchers, never saw them in action (yet?). However I did work the several european national teams. In my experience, the batter won't wait until those 5 very long seconds are over and call/ask the time-out before that.

KNK and you've said it right; too short (i.e. less than 2 sec.'s) is (too) common.:D

With most of the pitchers (besides the Chinese, who take the entire 5 sec pause) it's the 2 second pause that's the issue. They just want to touch and go.
