I worked at the ASA Western B Nationals this weekend.

The format was double elimination with a 3 game guarantee. My next to last game on Sunday was between teams with two losses each. I am PU. Here's the play:

R1 on first, steal attempt. Ball and runner arrive at second base at approx the same time, my partner is exactly where he needs to be to make the call, partner asks defender "show me the ball" to make sure she has control, she holds he ball up, he bangs the out on the runner. 3B coach who is the head coach, comes to me and states the umpire was blocked and would I go help him, I told her that she was welcome to go discuss the call with him. After she talked to him she came to me and said she wanted to ask the UIC for help. I told her that I was not going to bring the UIC for a judgement call, let's play. She started backing up toward the coaches box and said, "you guys are too proud to ask for help in a national tournament". I let this one go, then heard from her, "You guys suck!" At this point I ejected her.

After thinking about the situation, could I have defused it by summoning the UIC? We were on a 1:30 time limit and she had already spent a few minutes with this call. This happened in approx the 3rd inning with about 45-50 minutes left on the time clock. I never like to toss someone, but felt I had no choice after the last comment. Input anyone?

Why were you even talking to a coach about someone else's call? If anyone should have come to you, it is your partner. Apparently, your partner believed he had the call the whole way and that's the end of the story.

As a UIC, my first question after hearing the scenario would be, "what the hell am I doing out here?" and expect an answer from whomever called for me.

It isn't your job to keep coaches in the ball game, it is theirs to stay in the ball game and that doesn't happen when they choose to express their personal opinions of the umpires.

Here's another added thought to further reinforce that. In most games like that, you will have an evaluator on site. Call a uic to the field for a bogus reason and your rating will take a hit. That coach tossed herself, all you did was to agree with her.

In a National Tournament...........any coach who does not have a clue on how to approach the "PROPER" umpire for a request for help does not belong on the field anyway...............:D

She deserved to be tossed just for being stoooopid.........

How did the coach want to appeal to the UIC? Where was he when this was going on? Watching some other game?

The "s" word causes more trouble than any other, because while it was clearly obscene and a true "fighting" word in my generation, it is in common, casual use among younger people today. I even heard where a teacher around here told an elementary school kid that the homework he had handed in "s*ck*d." It is in regular use on the TV sitcoms, too.

It was sure to cause a bloody nose when I was playing, though.

I agree with what everyone has said. She should know how to make a propper appeal. She questioned/appealed the judgement, and that is as far as she was allowed to go. She had no right giving her personal opinion of your performance as an umpire.

So....did her team win or lose? Maybe they were better off without her!

You did the right thing to toss the coach. It would not have been wise to let a comment like that go. No, you don't summon the UIC, stupid move.
Don't worry about it, it happens. If the coach wants to act like a jacka$$ at a National, it's not your fault!
