ump pregame meeting...
 

had this happen twice already this fall with the same ASA ump...

Im the team captain, the ump, during the pregame ground rule meeting, says overthrows from the infield are a 1 base award, from the outfield are 2 bases. which is obviously wrong. when asked something to the effect of "i thought ASA just had a blanket 2 base award rule" ump says no, its 1 from infield, 2 from outfield.

what, if anything should i do?

should i bring a hardcopy of the rules to the next game this guy umps? should i place a call to the LD?

what, in other umps opinion, is the best course of action.

on a side note, this isnt the first ASA ump to have this 1 base/2 base philosophy, anyone know where they might have gotten it from? ie was it an old rule that was recently changed?

If/when he erroneously makes the call, you have the right to (politely) tell the umpire that you're protesting the call.

That's your only option.

but this is happening before the game starts and the ump doesnt seem to understand what the rule is. knowing this, i never said a word during the game about any overthrow/base award calls bc it would have been useless. mainly bc league i play in doesnt exactly do the whole "protest a call" thing. The LD can barely post a schedule >1 day before a game is supposed to be played, let alone handle umpire conflicts

would it be acceptable [in this case] to bring the rules with me to the next pregame meeting with this ump?

EDIT: I just want the game to be called fair, I dont want to win or lose bc a runner wasnt awarded the proper base(s).

My advice? Don't do it. Nails on a chalkboard to an umpire. You would be showing him up and getting on his bad side before the first pitch is thrown.

A protest is your right. If you don't exercise that right when the right moment arises, it's no one's fault but your own. If the LD isn't willing to hear a protest, then maybe you should reconsider whether or not you'd want to play in that league.

What a sec, a protest isnt a "right" at all. I work many things where there are no protests allowed including many tournaments. And there are many directors even more clueless than this ump. OR another possibility is this is the way that league plays and has always played.

There is likely a "head umpire/uic", talk to them.
Or yes, confront him with the written rule, but dont do it pregame. And conront is a strong word - but address it to him.

Perhaps do it at the end of the game and do it professionally and in a nonconfrontational manner.

I'm with Dave here. Play the game under protest. If the league/tournament doesn't allow protest, shame on the team for taking part in it. Mama Gump was right, Stupid is as Stupid does.

The rule is the old rule. It was changed about, oh, I don't know, 20 years ago! Ol' Smitty here needs to get to a clinic.

Somehow, I doubt 20 year old rule changes would be addressed... :cool:
