Out or not out?

R1 attempting to steal 2B. Throw down is in time, and the tag is made followed by a cloud of dust. Umpire asks the fielder to "show me the ball." Fielder lifts her glove, ball is in the glove. Umpire hammers the out. Ball then falls out of the glove onto the ground.

Out? or ball not controlled, so not out?

OUT. Agree with Mike - that drop is after the tag.

Yep. so did I about 18 years ago. Coach was so angry, he asked to get thrown out. I wouldn't do it. SOB was too eager and I figured I wouldn't give him the satisfaction. If I had to stay and deal with his **** team, so did he.

My partner (UIC at the time) had to physically pick him up and carry him to the dugout while I stood in the field with a ****-eating grin on my face. :D

That's an out in baseball, too. The only reason the fielder shows the ball is to demonstrate that the ball stayed in the glove after the tag was made—the ball is not on the ground or wedged between the back of the glove and the runner's body. It is not to prove how much control the fielder can maintain over the ball after a legal tag.

If you see the tag and see the ball remain in the glove, you don't also need to see the fielder lift the glove to show you anything. The fielder doesn't have to "complete the play" by extracting the glove with the ball still in it.

Thanks. It was my call, and the out stood. I was sure during the game, but starting overthinking on the drive home I guess ... BTW, there was not a peep from any coach or player on the call.

Not like you.
Especially having doubts about something you know and would tell the rest of us. But then, we all do that. :)
