catty q

i just bought a used asa catty that the guy said only has about 40 cuts on it. but the size/weight tag on the bottom of the handle is gone and theres an x marked with sharpie, does this mean anything?

No, probably just an identifying mark made by someone at a tournament to indicate that the bat passed a bat check (legal bat). That's the only thing that makes sense. Go to Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) to access ASA's equipment list to see if your bat is still legal.

You'd have to ask the manufacturer or the vendor that sold it to you. We're an officials forum, as in umpires.

You bought a used bat? And you are asking umpires?

The X could be anything from a positive bat check, a negative bat check, an indication of an entry point(to adjust or remove the balance rod), or just nothing.

BTW, only 40 cuts (which means nothing) and a manufacturer-applied label is gone?????

Good luck.

And then some.

But pray tell... What would I know about a marking some other guy made with a Sharpie? All I care about is whether or not the bat is legal, and the "X" tells me nothing.
