So I told her..well show me it then..
OK how bad was this... Yesterday - normal game, everything is cool..
High and Tight heater, with the catcher trying to catch it, it whizzing past my head.. ball goes to the back stop.. she drops the bat, I almost think she is going to charge the .. mound.. (circle), I kind of do nothing...sort of waiting for them to tell me what happened so I know to call  .. She says "It hit my hand". So .. I, being the MLB Umpire I always wanted to be said: "show me your hand". She takes off her glove...and i begin my medical examination.. Sure enough, my trained professional opinion was that big bruising that was quickly forming was indeed induced by a softball projected at high velocity.. and I send her to first base. And commence to fighting with the coach that hands are part of the bat. So lay it on me, how bad was that? |
It sounds to me like you got the help you needed to get the call right. I think you were dead on in this. Everyone mark your calenders, I agreed with Wade's call and posting
|
I wish we would have done this during one of my games last year. We weren't sure and thought it hit the bat. A little while later she gets pulled because the pain in her hand prevented her from throwing the ball.
'Getting it right' means using more than what we 'think' we saw/heard while the ball was alive. We can get more information later. |
You tell a funny tale my friend.
You got your help. No brainer good job. So far everyone likes it but the others will be around soon enough for administering any lashings you have coming.:) |
I am fairly certain that in one rule set (NCAA maybe) in the book or manual one of the things they talk about to make that decision is discoloration. I will still stand by Wade's decision and judgment, ON THIS ONE!

Well yesterday I was working a friendly (with two teams I know very well) as the BU. I was not sure of the call at first so I took out a quarter flipped it and ruled safe. I told the DC not to worry because the next close call will go his way.
This was the fourth game for both teams in 90 plus heat. Both teams were dead. Everyone laughed and the teams seemed revitalized for the rest of the game. BTW she was safe before the flip of the coin. |

1) Did you actually rule based on the flip, just flip and restate your ruling? 2) Would you really have ruled the next close call for the DC's team? ;) (Neither of these are serious questions....) |
1) I did not base my call on a coin flip. See last sentance
2) No, everyone was dead tired, trying to bring life to the game. Oh sh**... Remember to read all the instructions before answering :) |

Even I, as bad as I am, have used this with good results...in fact I think I have a photo...
Anyway, you gotta use all the information available...and you did! |
hmm I pretty much expected this to be frowned upon. Hell I even looked around afterwards to make sure no one but my partner saw it. it was the only way I could think of to get it right.. and afterall... I've seen it on TV.
