DeMarini Vendetta (Red with Rails)

Power hitter (she put it over a 230' fence earlier in the game) had her 3 month old DeMarini Vendetta (Red) bat break at the rails this weekend. The barrel past the pitch and almost made it to the short stop. To be honest I think we will see this girl playing college somewhere as a hitter. (14U Travel)

Did the umps at least examine the bat after it broke open? :D

Hey, in this world, they're never too young to cheat...

Yep I looked at it. I was kind of in awe. First broken bat in 20+ years of umping.

I'll bet her parents had a tough decision to make that night...

Send it back for a replacement, or frame that puppy on the mantle and buy a new one!

Was this an ASA tournament? Is so, did the umps collect the bat and send it in to OKC? My question for sending them in, who pays for the postage???

Per May 2009 Rule Clarifications:
Failed Equipment

The ASA Code defines an ASA Sanction Tournament as "a tournament approved by the ASA or a Local Association." Championship Play is defined as "a tournament or competition from which the winner or the winner and other selected teams may advance to higher levels of play of the Association."

Umpires should follow these guidelines when equipment failure occurs during an ASA Softball game:

1)Collect all parts of the failed piece of equipment.

a. Bats: secure all available parts (handle, barrel, end-caps, etc.)

b. Balls, Helmets, mask, etc (all available parts)

2)Get the owner's name, address, phone number, e-mail address

3)The defective equipment can be given to any ASA Representative, Umpire or Tournament Director for them to return to the ASA National Office or

4)Send the failed equipment to the ASA National Office.

a. Bats: secure all available parts (handle, barrel, end-caps, etc.)

b. Balls, Helmets, mask, etc (all available parts)

That didn't answer the question.

Most likely the ASA local association.

At an ASA invitational this weekend, 16U, we had a DeMarini bat break in two pieces. This bat has a white barrel, red handle, and an off-white grip.

The bat broke at the handle part, right in the middle of the red area. I asked our stand-by ump, who was on his off game, to take it to the tournament director and ask if they wanted to do anything with it. TD declined, so we just gave it back to the owner. I presume they'll try returning it. Not sure if they can get a refund, or if they'll just replace the bat.

The break was not clean, but rather a bunch of jagged little tears ranging from a quarter to about three quarters of an inch.

Seems to me that if you've used a defective product, you wouldn't necessarily want another potentially defective replacement.

We had this same team again in a later game, and I paid a bit more attention to their other two DeMarinis. I found "flaking" on the red part of the handle on one of them and did not allow it in the game. Probably another one that will be sent back.

I think this is the bat below [if I've done the link thing properly].

I've had a few Phoenix's shatter and a few Stealths break in half.

I've seen quite a few Louisville Slugger TPS bats break. One cracked two weeks ago.

I saw a Stealth break last year.

Oh wait, that one was doctored. :D
