Funny/Crazy partner situations

The previous post about dropped third strike reminded me of an interesting sitch I had with a partner about two years back.

I was working the plate on a game. Two strikes on the batter. t was a dropped third strike. The batter was tagged out for the final out. End of inning. My partner then comes to me and asks how come I did not rule her out automatically? I answered "because the ball hit the ground...dropped third strike rule." He looked at me with a puzzled face and then stated, "No, dropped third strike is when the catcher DROPS the third strike, not when it hits the ground. If she catches it, she didn't drop it. So it's not a dropped third strike."

My head hurt for a while after I heard that one.

Anyone have funny, weird, interesting, crazy, bad or other situations that you have had happen with a partner? I have a few more I'll share soon...

Out/safe

Once had a partner who had 4 out/safe calls on one batted ball. I was dumbfounded. Same partner in the same game called a batted ball that hit first base "foul". I should have known what I was in for when he shows up wearing shin guards for a slow pitch game.

I've had my fair share of out/safe calls...but never 4 on one batted ball.

Well, your partner is 50% there. He has the out part down, he just needs to stop changing the calls to safe.

I saw the same thing at a tournament two years ago. The ump said he was at the state ASA tourney and they told them that was the way to treat it. I went and got the page in the rule book and gave it to him. Sometimes we have to go back to school.

Hell no. I feel "out of uniform" enough wearing my ankle brace with shorts.

That's what I wear. Just because that ball ALWAYS finds the same damn spot on my shin. I love the ones with the detachable ankle guards.

One of my favorite statements from a catcher!

In Slowpitch.

I've never done this before, where do I stand?

*sigh* You've no idea how often I hear that.

My assignor frequently puts me with our new umpires to help them out, so I'm often calling the lower-level ball (Coed J league - so bad, it's level J). I'm not complaining, though. As I always say to him, "I'll call whatever you put in front of me." Makes it easier on him.

And yet, even on this forum it is more often D3K instead if U3K.

Yeah, but we're umpires and we always know what we are talking about and are never confused! :D

I will, from now on, call this play the "third strike rule" or uncaught third strike.

Thanks :)
