WCWS Umpires?

Have they announced the Regional/Super Regional/WCWS Umpires yet? Couldn't find it on Cactus Umpires if they have.

Skahtboi Tue May 05, 2009 01:13pm

I just know that once again, I am not one of them! :D

I know umpires in line for different levels have been notified, but if I remember correctly, I was under the impression these assignments would not be published in advance, but as the playoffs moved forward.

I could be wrong. I know we have a couple on here and do not believe it would be inappropriate if they strutted a little bit on here when they received their assignment(s).

No public list exists, and there are no plans for posting on any websites this year. The DI regional umpires are selected. DI supers and championships umpires are not selected at this time, as they will be selected at the conclusion of the regional/supers weekends. This is a change from years past.

DII regional selection came out yesterday (as the sites were announced Sunday night). The DII super regional umpires will be notified next week pending site selections (also something new this year). DII championship and DIII first round/championship umpires have received notice of their selections.

Oh lord, don't start that up. I heard some frats were thinking of something along the lines of this. That's all we need, a bunch of drunken frat boys playing for national titles and collegiate pride. As if the number of kegs consumed during the year wasn't enough. :D

Ugh.

As I learned being an intramural official and later supervisor in college, it is amazing what some people will do for a stupid t-shirt. :D

I was referring to the beer drinking...

But yes, having called intramural softball and supervised it as well, I know exactly what you're talking about.

Funny thing was that I was one of few umpires who threw people out. I wasn't going to take their $h!t. Best part about it was as I was walking back to the building to check out, my boss was walking out of the building. I had ejected someone the previous day. In front of everyone he says, "hey, Dave! I heard you tossed someone out yesterday! Awesome work, man!" and gave me the thumbs up.

Gotta love a program director who's got your back!

Mike,
I know of 3 here that have assignments. I'm sure there's some tales to come later - one of them will be with one of your deputies.

outathm Wed May 06, 2009 10:34am

I know 2 of the guys working with Mike's Deputy. I am sure the stories will come, although they seem to have a fairly good crew and very good teams.

CajunNewBlue Wed May 06, 2009 11:33am

checked the mail box... nope.
Guess i will have to wait for a few more years. :D

wadeintothem Wed May 06, 2009 12:36pm

shoot, mine must be lost in the mail.

CajunNewBlue Wed May 06, 2009 03:36pm

I did get to call the Louisiana 5A state championship game this past weekend and my wife gave birth to a 7lb 5oz baby girl, 12 hours later..... that should carry me for a few days. :) (big time hijack attempt ;) )

wadeintothem Wed May 06, 2009 03:47pm

Heck thats almost as good as the WCWS! Congrats on the baby!

Congrats on both counts.
But...
Didja get a new shirt to mark either occasion?

Well, we are waiting!!!!

CajunNewBlue Tue May 12, 2009 03:54pm

yeah.. waiting <----- insert big @ss blue letters here.
(ok, im way too bored at work)

Steve M Tue May 12, 2009 08:11pm

Big Slick and I were together at one regional and Outathm was at the other regional in Pa. Well I think my first plate game went longer than anyone else's - I'd certainly hope so, anyway. I had a 3-2 game that went 17 innings. It would have been over sooner if a good bunt could have been laid done at the right time, but............
My legs took at least 8 adult beverages on the porch to recover:D

outathm Tue May 12, 2009 08:30pm

I waited until the championship game to have extra innings, and it was also the elimination bracket team that won. Good tourney, and yes I am sure that Steve holds the 2009 record for longest game.

Mike's Deputy was all that anyone could ask for in a crew chief and more. Great learning experience and great softball.

Steve M Tue May 12, 2009 09:14pm

The 2 teams that went 17 in my game went 9 in the loser's bracket final - I had 1st in that game. I did end up with the plate in the final and that game went uneventfully.

We were put up in a bed and breakfast - and the owner is kind of amazing. I think she's 86 and still actually doing much of the work around the place. Breakfast each day was a meal and more.

outathm Wed May 13, 2009 12:04pm

We were put up in a regular hotel, but no teams. The teams were all staying around us, so each night was an adventure finding a restaurant to eat in without sitting next to a player. :D

We went across the street to a diner for breakfast each morning, on Sunday (mother's day) we got there just in time. On our way out I heard the hostess tell a man it was 45 minutes to wait for a table.

And maybe it was the players who were trying to avoid you!!! You could have driven to Abner's.

outathm Thu May 14, 2009 12:58pm

I wish I had thought of Abner's. The microbrewery in Downtown was very forgettable. Abner's would have been worth the drive!!

Steve M Thu May 14, 2009 05:43pm

Friday night we shared a buffet with some of the local high schoolers - who were on their way to a prom.

Steve M Fri May 15, 2009 05:04pm

Maybe it's Big Slick that was the cause of the overtime games. He was on the field for two at the regional and I see that he was on the field in a super regional that went 9 today.:D

3SPORT Sun May 17, 2009 09:23am

The lists for D1,D2, D3 are now posted on Cactus Umpires.

Three tired blues after UMass-UW marathon. 8 hours. Two games. UW survives. Hope blues didn't have to be back to work Monday morning.

Damn it, you got my hopes up for "UW" meaning the REAL UW. As in University of Wisconsin. :p

And 11 on Saturday . . . it must be me. :(

ASA/NYSSOBLUE Mon May 18, 2009 08:21am

Nice to see names I actually know in a couple of lists - our HS group clinicians doing DIII regionals in NJ, and and Ed Whipple, who instructs at our NYS school, doing the D1 regional at Florida....Ed is one of the nicest guys, and greatest instructors you ever want to meet.

wadeintothem Mon May 18, 2009 11:26am

A good friend of mine who has taught me a lot is at UCLA D1. Shes a great umpire. Fingers crossed for her!

Yep, a lot of good umpires on that list.
