Here's one...
 
HS JV game, bottom of fifth inning, home team ahead 11-2. Mercy rule is 10 runs after 5 innnings. I'm PU.

First batter hits a double, goes to third on a passed ball and comes home on a ground out (1st out of the inning) by B2. The only problem was...she stepped right over home plate without touching it! Visiting team made no indication that they were going to appeal or that they even saw R1 miss home.

I will tell you what I did later.

What would you do?

What would you do?
Leave the confines of the field at exactly my normal pace trying to avoid tipping anyone off (defense or offense). Watch for either the defense to leave the field or my partner or I to leave the confines. When either happens it is too late for an appeal.

Is that like an "out of body" experience?

I would have confirmed the score with each coach and received agreement of the mercy rule being applied. If no appeal on the runner at home, hearty oats, baby, we're on our way!

I would have told the catcher to appeal the runner missing the plate. That way I could nullify the run and continue to enjoy umpiring this game. I believe we owe it to the teams to get the full 7 innings in so they can get their money's worth from me as an umpire. :rolleyes:

I would make sure my partner wasn't armed before making such a move. :D

My game yesterday had both my partner and one of the coaches both packing pieces (in their vehicles). Both were some sort of feds. Hmmmmmmmmm

I would signal safe... wait a bit.... then call ballgame and go spend my game fee on something to drink. :cool:

There've been times when I've wanted to keep one in my car, just in case. I could easily do that, and no one would ever be the wiser. But I would know it's there, and I would know I'm breaking the law (since I'm on town property when I'm calling games). That's enough for me.

I once had a partner who was active NYPD, and once we were working men's rec together, and I made a controversial call at home to end a game, and as we were leaving the field to much noise, he said, "Partner, I have your back - I have my piece right in my sock!" :D

Pretty much what I did.

Of course, I did think about staying out there and enjoying two plus more innings in the unseasonably warm 90 degree afternoon sun.......:)
